We went big and still haven’t gone home! The 2013 Reserve Chardonnay allowed us to show our fun side while paying tribute to the classic California style that made this varietal what it is today.
To start, the best Chardonnay batches of the 2013 vintage were selected and then fermented in oak. Once fermentation was complete, the wine sat on the lees for eighteen weeks with daily bâttonage (stirring of the lees) for the first month. It was then aged in oak up until bottling.
The first stylistic clue this wine gives away is its deep golden hue lined with a hay colored rim. Who can wait to dive in? The nose leads with an abundance of tropical fruit including grilled pineapple and mango balanced with a healthy dose of vanilla bean.
Once consumed, this wine dillydallies on the palate with no particular place to go. The creamy texture is well integrated with a backbone of orange and lemon acidity. As this wine continues to age, it will develop honey and sherry characteristics.
We also feel inclined to mention this wine does not merely ask to be paired with food, but demands it. Enjoy with richer seafood dishes and cream-based sauces. Or, since this is a bolder white, try it with meals that are traditionally paired with red wines.
