2015 Broken Earth Limited Release Grenache Rosé
Rose, as a wine, has made many appearances over the years and each time it offers a different expression of the style. The more recent versions focused on very fresh strawberry fruit with simple flavours and abundant residual sugar, trying to woo those consumers who prefer “fruity” (aka sweet) wines. These wines should be applauded for luring new wine drinkers to the fold and now we need to encourage these newcomers to try more traditional and interesting wines.
This wine offers the obvious berry fruit characters that Rose is known for but it carries a more sophisticated, intricate palate. The parcel of fruit is specifically chosen for Rose production so it must possess fresh fruit, interesting and evolving flavours, in addition to bright and balancing acid.
The grapes are hand harvested and crushed to tank and the skin contact is continually monitored until the right balance of colour and firmness is achieved. A portion of the juice is then removed from the skins (referred to as saignee) and fermented similar to white wines. The smell of the ferment is amazing, it shows amazing perfumed fruit that permeated the winery buildings. The wine, once fermentation is complete (we allow all the sugar to ferment to alcohol, producing a dry wine), it is basically treated the same as a white wine and bottled as soon as possible to retain freshness. We utilize screwcap to further retain the wine’s youthfulness.
This wine has an array of delicate red berry fruit characters that flow through the palate and meld beautifully with the balancing bright acidity. The skin contact was used to also add a hint of firmness to the palate so the wine finished clean in your mouth. This is especially important when the wine is fully chilled. Enjoy!
