2016 Limited Release Tempranillo Tannat
Up until 2016, we only had about an acre of Tempranillo that was grafted over Merlot stock in the mid 1990’s. We have since planted more of this varietal, but this particular wine was made from the original acre of Tempranillo and we were not expecting a large crop so we were not planning to ferment these grapes separately.
The Tannat ripens at the same time and the expected tiny Tempranillo volume had been added to those grapes to ferment together. Fortunately, the 2016 harvest provided ideal growing conditions and the Tempranillo block responded well to our soil amelioration program. Unfortunately, the vineyard team continued with combining the unexpected large amount of Tempranillo fruit with Tannat (a ‘Post-it’ note with “SORRY” written on it was stuck on the side of the 6 tons of fruit). The gondola had 3.5 tons of Tempranillo (enough to be fermented on its own) with the 2.5 tons of Tannat. Although this wine was not intended for combination, we believe it is outstanding.
