2018 Limited Release Ancianos Red Blend
Ancianos, meaning “elders” in Spanish, has been crafted to honor the legacy of our vineyard founders. Our vineyard, Rancho Tierra Rejada, was originally planted in 1973 and is one of the most historic vineyards in the Paso Robles AVA. The meticulous planning it took decades ago is a testament to the foresight of its founders.
After many blending trials, the final components were hand selected and blended right before bottling on June 18th, 2020. It was a small batch blend comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc that had all been aged in neutral oak, and some Merlot from several different vineyard blocks stored in stainless steel tanks.
The primary component (Cabernet Sauvignon from blocks 4C and 4D) was harvested on October 18th, 2018 and completed fermentation on November 5th, 2018. This wine then underwent malolactic fermentation, enhancing its subtle flavors, and was placed in barrel on April 5th, 2019 to age. The Malbec and Cabernet Franc were each fermented and underwent secondary fermentation after being pressed off their skins. These varietals were later combined in tank and the resulting blend was placed in barrel on April 11th, 2019. The 2018 Merlot used was from three of our best performing blocks, each harvested and fermented separately and later perfectly blended together.
Ancianos is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Merlot (32%), Malbec (21%), Cabernet Franc (8%), and Petite Sirah (4%).
